Here we go...

Ahoy!
The knitting olympics are underway, and so is progress on my Pirate Mittens!

I chose to go with a suggestion from the comments, so I'm doing tonal skulls (for some reason that phrase cracks me up).

I started the corrugated ribbing with brown and white, did the first pattern repeat in light pink, and started the second repeat (not shown above) in dark pink.
I got all that done last night, and I'm starting to think I may have seriously overestimated how long it will take me to make these mittens. I figured "first time doing fairisle" and anticipated many bouts of frustrated frogging. Luckily, I managed to get a little system going so I don't tangle the yarn and my tension is pretty consistent. Wow! I'm already really glad I decided to challenge myself as a knitter, because I'm feeling really confident about the projects I can take on next.
Such as, when I finish the mittens way before the deadline, the Pirate Hat...

Your mitten looks awesome!! I love the colors you chose and the design is turning out really well. Wow, looks like you may be done with the whole pair by this weekend!! A matching hat and scarf would be so cool, too. I'm so impressed with your colorwork- fair isle still freaks me out. ;-) Take care! :-)
